The Limelight began as a side project from a previous comic, So Many Levels. While shifting through several ideas for that comic, I felt as though something was missing. After several hiatuses, I knew that I wanted to do something more distinctive yet refreshing and simple. I also wanted to do something that readers could grasp immediately without the intention of having an agenda, telling a story, or even being funny. The Limelight focuses on the elegant and not-so-elegant little pleasures that we adore in life. It has no major storyline and only a few characters: a 20-something young man named Jose Alvaron-Harris, his cat Sage, his boyfriend Wayne and several random family members who appear occasionally throughout the strip. The comic's only aim is to highlight Jose's various likes and loves, which range from wearing woolly sweaters and reciting tongue-twisters to eating apple butter instead of peanut butter. The Limelight was designed to appeal to everyone, including readers who don't necessarily read comic strips. Because there is no storyline, readers will not have to play "catch up" or become acquainted with a host of characters; instead, they can enjoy the message of each daily strip, similar to the manner of a fortune cookie. As readers browse the strip, they can resonate with Jose's innocent thoughts and declarations, at some points smirking or even saying to themselves, "I thought I was the only one who liked that!" On some occasions, the comic will also explore issues affecting society in the present time. But in every case, the aim of this comic is to merely bring a smile to readers' faces, or share a tender-hearted moment they can connect with. |
